![]() ![]() Children participating in the breakfast program. The Mission of Fundación Ayuda Niños La Paz, A.C. (FANLAP) is to provide improved nutrition and education beyond the sixth grade for children and adolescents from impoverished areas in order to give them the opportunity to improve the quality of the lives of themselves and their families. In the summer of 2000, we started a scholarship program with five full scholarships to junior high school. In addition to transportation costs to and from school of up to one dollar a day (which may double in 2011), the students were provided uniforms, gym clothes, shoes, tennis shoes, backpacks and school supplies. The program has steadily grown, and in the school year 2010 - 2011, we enrolled 170 students in junior and senior high school, as well as a few college students, who have individual sponsors. These students live in the neighborhoods in which we concentrate our major efforts. If we had the funds to do so, we could fund double or triple this number who currently are not able to attend school past the sixth grade. In the summer of 2009 we completed a library with funds attained through ICF. We employ a full-time and an assistant librarian. We also pay a teacher, our first college graduate, who teaches ethics and values to our scholarship students and conducts our homework club. In some cases, students who excel in subjects such as math and chemistry tutor other students who are struggling. Our dining room serves an average of 150 students a day during the school year. For the last three years we have received funds from SEDESOL/INDESOL which cover operating costs from May through December. We need funds to cover January through April at a monthly cost of approximately $2,300 USD a month. Because our cooks are volunteers who live in the Colonia we do not have employee expenses for the dining room. It costs approximately $25,000 USD a year to run our library, pay the salaries of the employees and purchase necessary supplies. Our costs for the scholarship program are approximately $75,000.00 USD per year. Our operating expenses include the salary of a Director. It is evident that we need to hire an assistant to the director within the next year. We expect the costs of the two to be 12,000 USD for 2011. We are members of CEMEFI (Centro Mexicano para la Filantropia) and are the only association in Baja California Sur to have received its certification of transparency and legality. In 2009 we were awarded the distinction of ¨Forjador del Año¨ by Los Madrugadores de La Paz, a group of businessmen interested in philanthropy and community development. |
